On Veiled, her debut album, this 23-year-old singer-songwriter goes further than that statement of emotional denial, bringing in some powerful, Sly Stone-style groaning in "Who Are They To Say," and sweet, lethargic, Juliana Hatfield-like pop in "Happy Birthday." With quirky, pining soulful tones twisted up with feminine ponderings, Andreone follows in the notable footsteps of Kate Bush and Tori Amos. Despite the comparisons, Andreone strike out on her own with strong songwriting that mixes dark themes with intoxicating blues-pop hooks. |
